denise e. koker

I am drawn to animals

—not as symbols or metaphors or icons—

but to the animal for its own sake.

Drawing brings it to life.

Shape and dimension

Face — eyes, nose, mouth, expression

Extremities — hands, feet, talons, paws, claws

Textures — feathers, skin, shell, carapace

Behavior and physical context

The study of the particular and the granular

– and the unification of these elements in a composition –

conveys the character of the rendered being.

I draw for the beauty of the art and love of the subject.

I learn when I draw.
